Singapore, February 26, 2003 – CommerceTrust Limited, Singapore has established the Asia Trustmark Alliance (ATA) with Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI), Japan Direct Marketing Association (JADMA), Electronic Commerce Promotion Council of Japan (ECOM), Korea Institute for Electronic Commerce (KIEC) and Secure Online Shopping Association (SOSA) in Taipei by signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in which the four countries will closely cooperate on the Online Trustmark programs and dispute resolution systems.  Chairman, CommerceTrust Limited, Singapore, Assoc Prof Dr.Toh See Kiat signed the MOU on behalf of CommerceTrust Limited.

Under the Alliance the four countries will mutually recognize the member countries’ national Trustmark programs and cooperate on cross-border consumer complaint handlings. By this alliance Singapore consumers will be able to

    1. Identify businesses that have been awarded the national Trustmarks are as trustworthy as the ones accredited with    the TrustSg/ConsumerTrust Trustmark; and

    2. File a complaint against the business in the member countries to CommerceTrust Limited which then refers the    complaint to the appropriate dispute resolution organization.

The Alliance is expected to enhance safety and consumer trust in cross-border online transactions.  In Singapore, the National Trust Council (NTC) has appointed Commercetrust Limited as the B2C Authorised Code Owner (ACO) for the TrustSg seal. Operating a code of practice that meets the standards set by the NTC, CommerceTrust Limited conducts a thorough audit assessment on online merchants' processes and policies, and then awards the ConsumerTrust trustmark and the TrustSg seal to merchants who adhere to their stringent codes of practice. JADMA and JCCI in Japan, KIEC in Korea and SOSA in Taiwan operate similar programs in their respective countries.

Under the Alliance, the four countries have also agreed to cooperate to establish and implement a complaint handling system that will refer complaints from consumers in any Alliance Member Country arising out of e-commerce transactions and made against any Accredited Business to the relevant Dispute Resolution Organisation.  CommerceTrust Limited will address complaints about Accredited Businesses in Singapore.
